Australian Open 2008
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is the unseeded Frenchman who made a tennis history in the Australian open. He is one of the few
un-seeded player to reach the final of a Grand Slam. The previously little known Tsonga punched his way through the
draw in Melbourne, upsetting the likes of Andy Murray, Richard Gasquet and Mikhail Youzhny along the way.
Tsonga's semi-final success over number two seed Nadal was in a different league though, as he ripped the Spaniard to
pieces during a brutal 6-2 6-3 6-2 straight sets victory to book a place in the final of the Australian Open.
Mohammad Ali of tennis they called him, and believe me, Nadal can surely testify to that. The great Ali himself will be
proud of the excellent job Tsonga did on the world No. 2. Like "The Greatest", he controlled his intimidating opponent
with lightning speed, skill and power.
Tsonga opened up with a stunning win over No.9 seed Andy Murray and took out three more seeds in Richard Gasquet, No.8
seed, Mikhail Youzhny (No.14) and Rafael Nadal (No.2) along the way to the decider.
Tsonga was eventually betten by Novak Djokovic at the final. "I'm very proud of myself," Tsonga said. "I'm happy for
Novak, because he played unbelievable today. I don't know if I have to be sad or happy of this final, but I feel
great."
